X-Men: First Class

Director: Matthew Vaughan
Starring: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Rose Byrne, Kevin Bacon & January Jones

The plot for the film includes Nazi doctors, the Cuban missile crisis and mutant superheroes. It's an odd mix but it works very well indeed. Whilst the movie has many fine action sequences, it's core is essentially about the friendship between Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr aka Professor X and Magneto. There is also a splendid turn by Nicholas Hoult as mad scientist, Dr Hank McCoy.
The style of the film & to some extent the plot, mimics the early Bond movies of the 1960's. This is no bad thing, giving the X-men film franchise a fresh approach.
The movie exudes retro sophistication and Vaughan's confidence as a director has clearly grown since "Kick Ass".
A thoroughly enjoyable and accomplished superhero film. First class!

This was taken at Mill Lakes near Hucknall, Nottingham. I decided to cycle part of the National Cycle Network route 6, which passes through this area. Good job I remembered to take my camera with me!

Frankenstein

On Saturday I watched a "shot as live" performance of Danny Boyle's "Frankenstein". This was part of the National Theatre Live cannon of work. NTL are doing some really impressive work modernising the theatre, not least of which live & almost live performances being streamed to cinemas all over the country.
One of the unique selling points of "Frankenstein" is that the two lead actors, Benedict Cumberpatch & Jonny Lee Miller both play the role of the creature & the doctor on alternate evenings. This is a device that works very well & gives the theatre goer two very different experiences. Needless to say this is a damn near perfect production. Absolutely loved it!
